The Winter Gardens in Blackpool will be the setting for the 2024 Women’s World Matchplay on Sunday afternoon. Will Beau Greaves be able to defend her title, or will we see a new champion crowned? Let’s dive into the preview of the upcoming tournament.
This year marks the third edition of the PDC’s premier event for women. In 2022, Fallon Sherrock claimed the inaugural Women’s World Matchplay title, while Greaves emerged victorious in 2023.
The field for the Women’s World Matchplay comprises eight talented players. The top eight performers from the Women’s Series over the past year received invitations to compete. Due to Aileen de Graaf’s absence, the ninth-ranked player on the Order of Merit has been selected to join the lineup.
Beau Greaves stands out as the clear favorite heading into the Women’s World Matchplay. Known as ‘Beau ‘n’ Arrow’, Greaves currently leads the Women’s Series Order of Merit. Although her dominance has slightly waned this season, the young talent has still managed to win three out of the 12 Women’s Series tournaments and reach the final on eight occasions.
Fallon Sherrock, another strong contender, has already etched her name into the tournament’s history. Despite a relatively subdued performance in recent tournaments, the “Queen of the Palace” remains a formidable opponent. Sherrock faced Greaves in the final of the last Women’s Series event, ultimately losing 5-0.
Lisa Ashton, a four-time women’s world champion, is always a threat in women’s darts. While her winning moments may be fewer these days, the Lancashire Rose displayed her prowess by clinching two consecutive tournament victories in the lead up to the Women’s World Matchplay.
Mikuru Suzuki is another player to watch out for in the upcoming tournament, showcasing her talent and skill on the big stage.
The distribution of prize money will also be a key factor in the Women’s World Matchplay, providing additional motivation for the participants as they aim to secure a share of the rewards on offer.
