The 2024 World Series of Darts Finals is set to take place this weekend from Friday, September 13, through Sunday, September 15, at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam. The Dutch capital has been the host for the final tournament of the World Series of Darts for several years.
“As the name of this tournament dictates, participants from quite a few different countries are present at the World Series of Darts Finals. The 32 participants come from 14 different countries,” said a spokesperson. “For the Dutch fans, this is annually one of the rare opportunities to see the best darts players in the world at work in their own country.”
History of the event reveals that it is the 10th time the World Series of Darts Finals has been played. Michael van Gerwen emerged victorious in the first two editions in 2015 and 2016 by defeating Peter Wright each time. He continued his dominance in 2017, 2019, and 2023, solidifying his status as a top player.
James Wade claimed the title in 2018, while Welsh players took home the trophy in the following years. Gerwyn Price triumphed in 2020 and 2022, with Jonny Clayton securing the victory in 2021. Van Gerwen reclaimed the championship in 2023 after overpowering Nathan Aspinall in the final with a score of 11-4.
This year marks the fifth edition of the tournament in the Netherlands. The event had its debut in the country in 2019, with Van Gerwen emerging victorious for the fourth time. After a stint in Salzburg, Austria in 2020, the final tournament returned to the AFAS Live in Amsterdam in 2021.
A significant number of players were invited based on their positions on the World Series Order of Merit. The top eight ranked players had protected status in the draw for this tournament. Additionally, players from the world rankings who had not yet qualified were added to the lineup, along with eight spots available through a qualifying tournament for PDC Tour Card holders. Andrew Gilding secured a spot after Nathan Aspinall had to withdraw due to injury.
The top 8 seeding list includes: Luke Littler, Gerwyn Price, Rob Cross, Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Peter Wright, and Dimitri van den Bergh.
As for the favorites, players like Damon Heta, Nathan Aspinall, Stephen Bunting, and others have secured spots through the World Series Order of Merit Qualifiers and PDC Order of Merit Qualifiers.
Luke Humphries, the reigning world champion and world number one, is seen as the leading contender for the overall victory. With several televised tournaments on the horizon, Humphries aims to maintain his winning streak and further solidify his position as a top player in the darts world.
